With Xodus, we’re accelerating blue carbon’s evolution through precise research and technical expertise

The snapshot

NOC Innovations is working in tandem with Xodus, a large and reputable consultancy in the offshore engineering and energy space. Together, we’re accelerating blue carbon’s evolution through precise research and technical expertise.

The partner

Xodus are a multi-national organisation specialising in advisory services, engineering and energy consultancy. They also support companies in their digital, data and sustainability transitions on- and off-shore.

Their technical expertise, outstanding reputation and global reach make them an obvious partner of choice for developing a blue carbon service for the offsetting market.

The problem and the goal

Through initial discussions, we quickly realised we had complementary capabilities in the rapidly developing blue carbon sector.

Xodus needed to work with an organisation that specialised in habitat mapping and carbon valuation of marine environments to develop blue carbon site assessments as part of the offsetting accreditation process.

As such, we were keen to engage with them, and establish how we could provide a long-term service that’d propel them ahead of their competitors – and keep them there.

The solution

Producing blue carbon site assessments to the highest standards is difficult, and requires extremely complex scientific analyses.

But we’re experts in this area, and have demonstrated that through a number of other research-funded projects in various locations around the world. The outputs of this research, through the publication of our scientific papers, have formed our reputation as a provider of the most credible science for blue carbon site valuations.

Combining our scientific leadership with Xodus’ wider technical and advisory capabilities in the offsetting market has resulted in a fully integrated service for organisations looking to value and accredit blue carbon offsetting sites to unbeatable standards.

The results

The first site we worked on together was a 6,500-acre coastal site in Brazil.

Together, we applied our expertise to successfully demonstrate the carbon currently sequestered in the site, and the habitat’s potential to sequester and store more carbon in the future.

A fortunate byproduct of this collaborative project is that the Brazilian site is of genuine scientific interest, as it combines land- and marine-based carbon sequestration through native forest, mangroves and seagrasses (among other vegetation).

Understanding how these combined habitats can sequester and store carbon dioxide could result in similar sites around the world being protected for their carbon sequestration potential.

At NOC Innovations we seek to understand how today’s science and technology can unlock tomorrow’s potential.
